Hydration – Why is it so important to drink water regularly?
Importance of Hydration – Water makes up more than half of your body weight. Every day we lose water through tasks such as going to the bathroom, breathing, moving and most especially when training through sweating. Every cell, tissue and organ within our bodies depends on water for survival. With this in mind, it is absolutely imperative we ensure our bodies remain constantly hydrated not only to aid in these every day activities, but it is also one the of the major factors involved in ensuring our bodies have the opportunity to perform at optimum health.
How much hydration is enough?
For most people 2-3 liters of water is sufficient, for those training, in particular at a high intensity, it is essential to your performance and recovery that you are ensuring your at the higher end of this water intake to replenish the additional amounts lost through training.
This amount of water required daily can be at times an overwhelming thought. Some points to keep you on track, have a reusable 1 litre bottle handy. Make points throughout your day to be refilling to keep you on track. A refill mid morning, another mid afternoon and one late afternoon / early evening. For those who don’t like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or fresh fruit. Try to steer clear of flavored drinks, sports and energy drinks as most are very high in sugar, stick to fresh fruit added to plain water.

Ensuring that your water intake is equal to or higher than your output ensures a balance of body fluids. It aids in digestion, absorption, circulation, transportation of nutrients and regulating body temperature. It can aid bloating, promote a healthy appearance of skin and can help to avoid unnecessary muscle fatigue through inadequate fluids.
As you can see, the benefits of hydration are paramount to optimum health and performance and a factor we all need to ensure is not overlooked.
